What is an armpit detox?

An armpit detox is a process of removing buildup, uncloging pores, and restoring the natural balance of the armpit area. There are a few different concoctions you can use to create one, but I like to keep it simple with an easy bentonite clay armpit detox recipe.

Why you might need an armpit detox.

If you’re experiencing more armpit odor there’s a good chance that using an armpit detox mask will help tremendously. Increased odor may be caused by an increase in certain odor-causing bacteria in the armpit area or lots of impurities that are trapped in the area.

Another reason you may be looking to do an armpit detox is if you’re switching to a natural deodorant. Doing a detox mask with bentonite clay or charcoal can help make the transition a lot less smelly.

If you’ve been using conventional deodorant for years, your armpit pores are likely clogged with all sorts of impurities and potentially harmful chemicals. Unfortunately, most of the conventional deodorants on the market contain lots of potentially harmful ingredients like synthetic fragrances, phthalates, and parabens.

Antiperspirants are a big offender when it comes to clogging the underarm area because they are created to prevent sweat and are usually formulated with aluminum.

Preventing sweat may be appealing for some people for aesthetic reasons and comfort. But, the potential risks tend to outweigh the appeal in my opinion.

Sweating is one way the body rids itself of toxins and helps to regulate body temperature. And since you actually have lymph nodes in the armpit area, allowing the body to sweat as it needs to is beneficial.

So how exactly do you create your own armpit detox mask?

Bentonite Clay Armpit Detox Recipe

This simple DIY detox mask uses equal parts bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar.

You’ll need:

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

1 tbsp calcium bentonite clay

Non-metal bowl (preferably a glass bowl)

Non-metal mixing utensil (a wooden spoon works)

Instructions:

1. Clean underarms with mild non-toxic soap and water. I like this one by divine clementine.

2. Pat skin dry.

3. Combine apple cider vinegar and bentonite clay in bowl, mixing thoroughly. If needed, add a few drops of filtered water until the clay is completely wet.

4. Completely cover armpits with an even layer of the detox mask.

5. Leave on 5 to 15 minutes. Start with 5 minutes if you have sensitive skin.

6. Wipe the area clean with a warm washcloth.

7. Optional, swipe area with a witch hazel applied to a cotton ball.

Note: Do not use metal when dealing with bentonite clay because it draws out metals. If you have sensitive skin, try reducing the ratio of apple cider vinegar and using water instead.

Have leftovers? You can also use the rest as a clay face mask or on other parts of your body, like your chest and back.

Why I prefer bentonite clay.

As I mentioned earlier, there are a few different variations for armpit detox mask recipes. However, I prefer bentonite clay specifically for its ability to draw out metals and antibacterial properties.

Benefits of armpit detoxing.

Our armpits are home to a high concentration of sweat glands, making them a prime location for the body to release toxins. Over time, the use of conventional deodorants and antiperspirants, which contain chemicals like aluminum, can clog these glands and prevent them from functioning properly. After some using the DIY detox mask consistently you’ll likely notice:

  • Reduced Body Odor: By removing buildup and bacteria from the underarm area, armpit detoxing can help reduce body odor.
  • Improved Skin Health: Detoxing can unclog pores, prevent ingrown hairs, and promote healthier, smoother skin.
  • Better Absorption of Natural Deodorants: By removing buildup, detoxing can improve the effectiveness of natural deodorants, allowing them to absorb more effectively into the skin.

What to expect during the transition period.

Keep in mind that after doing your first couple of armpit detoxes, you may notice some swollen lymph nodes in your armpit area. This usually goes away after a few detoxes or within a few days. However, if you notice lots of skin irritation, discontinue using the clay mask.

You can also try less apple cider vinegar and more water in your mix to avoid sensitivity. In my experience, I actually noticed less sensitivity the more I did the masks.

How to get the most out of your armpit detox.

A bentonite clay mask may help with body odor, but there are some other steps you can take to make this more effective.

  • Switch to a non-toxic, natural deodorant and discontinue the use of conventional antiperspirants.
  • Use a charcoal soap when bathing.
  • For best results, apply the mask daily for three to seven days until odor improves.
  • Continue to do an armpit detox once a month to maintain odor control.

Armpit detoxes are a simple and natural way to improve the health of your underarm skin and reduce body odor. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can clear unwanted gunk, more easily switch to natural deodorant, and enjoy the benefits of less smelly pits.
