Finding clean beauty products can be challenging, even for someone who’s been making the switch for some time. A few mainstream stores like Target have made steps to include better products in their inventory, but finding products that really fit the bill can still be tricky.

Since there’s technically no standard definition for what’s considered “clean”, some brands have lower standards than others. I use a lot of products from BeautyCounter because they have exceptional standards.

But I do get that some of their products can be on the pricier side and you might not want to wait on shipping. That’s why finding products at a more accessible store like Target can definitely make things easier sometimes.

What does Clean at Target really mean?

You may have noticed the little green emblem on some of Target’s beauty and personal care products. At this time the designation does include products that exclude quite a few possibly unsafe ingredients. Some of these include phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde donors, glycol ethers and PFAS. You can view the full list here.

Although their list is quite large, there are some ingredients that I like to avoid that aren’t included on the list. One of the big ones is Fragrance. Since fragrance or perfume can actually contain a host of undisclosed potential carcinogens or endocrine disruptors, I avoid it as much as possible.

Tips for Finding Clean Beauty Products at Target

In all honesty, since their standard for what’s considered clean is comparably low, I take a few extra steps to ensure that I’m buying non-toxic products at Target.

  1. Use the Clean at Target logo as a starting point. Instead of considering this a final seal of approval, use it to filter out which products to start within your search quickly.
  2. Download the EWG healthy living app and scan the products. Even if the product has a clean logo, scan it to see where it ranks with the Environmental Working Group. I consider anything under three acceptable.
  3. Try to avoid researching a product on the fly. If possible, research your products before you run out of your current items.

Now that you know better what clean at Target means and how to find safer products there, let’s get to my top picks.

My Top Clean Skincare Picks at Target

TruSkin Vitamin C Anti-Aging with Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum

Vitamin C is a staple in my skincare routine. I like that this one is paired with hyaluronic acid to get a fresh, dewy look.

Versed Day Dissolve Cleansing Balm

If double cleansing is your thing, this cleansing balm literally dissolves the makeup away.

CocoKind My Matcha All-Over Moisture Stick

Being that I’m a matcha super fan, is it a surprise that this one’s on the list? It’s a perfect quick moisturizer to keep in your purse without worrying about spills.

Honest Beauty Gentle Gel Cleanser with Chamomile + Calendula

This cleanser is a nice staple product for any skin type. It doesn’t leave skin dry or tight and is perfect if you like to double cleanse.

My Favorite Clean Body Care Products From Target

Natrium the Glow Getter Multi-Oil Hydrating Body Wash

In my opinion, finding the right body wash or soap is the foundation of a good body care routine. Natrium really hits the mark. I’ve used a few of their body washes, but this one’s my favorite so far.

The Honest Company Calm Body Oil – Lavender

This nourishing oil is perfect for a nighttime routine because it contains lavender for a sense of calm.

Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castille Soap

I couldn’t make this list without including the OG clean beauty superstar that is Dr. Bronner’s. This one always makes the list because it has so many uses.

Clean Makeup Finds at Target

Wet n’ Wild Mega Length Mascara

No matter how many mascaras I try, I keep coming back to this one. It’s probably because it’s an unbeatable value for a really great mascara. Although this one does a really good rating on the EWG database, be aware that it does contain some iron oxides, which are a controversial ingredient for some. For me, it’s clean enough.

KISS Lash Couture Strip Lash False Eyelash Glue

Yep, you read that right. I found a safer lash adhesive. I stumbled upon this one looking for something else and found out that it got a 2 rating on the EWG Skindeep database. So if you’re an occasional false lash wearer, this one is definitely worth the try.

Well People Bio Stick Foundation

Many of Well People’s products are worth a try since most of them are EWG verified. This foundation stick is great for touch ups on the go.

Honest Beauty Lip Gloss

Here’s another EWG-Verified beauty pick at Target. In addition to a glossy shine, these have a subtle hint of color.

Honest Beauty Get It Together Eye Shadow Palette

This palette is another top pick from Honest Beauty. The colors are rich enough for most skin tones and a great value for the quality of the shadows.

***

Target does have quite a few clean beauty products. The key is to do your research beforehand and avoid depending solely on their Clean emblem as it can be a bit misleading in a lot of cases. Just like everything else in your wellness journey, making the switch to cleaner products does take some trial and error. Hopefully this post will get you off to a good start.
