Hot chocolate is a wintertime staple, but the powdered mixes at the store often contain refined sugar, dairy, and other miscellaneous ingredients that can make fibroid symptoms worse. However, you really don’t need a mix to make great tasting, high-quality hot cocoa that’s actually good for you.

Hot chocolate is actually super easy to make from scratch and way more nutritious when you can pick your own ingredients. My adaptation of this hot winter drink is perfect for anyone, but it’s especially great for those of us dealing with hormonal imbalances and uterine conditions. This recipe for hot cocoa is filled with nutrients that can actually help your symptoms instead of making them worse.

Cacao vs. Cocoa

Cacao powder is a nutrient-rich powder that comes from the cacao plant. It’s used to make chocolate. Cocoa is actually made from cacao but is processed using heat which removes a good amount of the nutrients. Cacao contains several nutrients including polyphenols, magnesium, and copper.

Blackstrap Molasses

Blackstrap molasses is a natural sweetener that has nutritional value, unlike refined sugar. It contains good amounts of iron, calcium, magnesium, and B6.

Non-Dairy Milk

Pretty much any milk will do the job, but I always like to use half coconut milk because it has some fat to create a little frothiness. There won’t be much lasting frothiness when using non-dairy milk because they don’t have enough fat to create a lasting foam.

Hand Frother

This tool is my secret weapon because it allows me to mix everything really well. If you don’t have a frother you can just use a whisk, but you probably won’t have any foam at all.

Healthy Hot Chocolate Recipe

2 Cups Non-Dairy Milk

2 Tbsp Cacao Powder

1-2 Tbsp Blackstrap Molasses

Tools:

Hand Frother

Saucepan

Directions:

Heat milk to just below boiling in a small saucepan. It’s important not to let it boil so the milk doesn’t start to separate. Remove from heat. Drop in cacao powder and blackstrap molasses. Insert hand frother a few centimeters from the bottom of the saucepan and mix. Carefully pour into your mug. Enjoy!
